Preparing for College and Careers

Preparing for College and Careers addresses the knowledge, skills, and behaviors all students need to be prepared for success in college, career, and life. The focus of the course is the impact of today’s choices on tomorrow’s possibilities. Topics to be addressed include twenty-first century life and career skills; higher order thinking, communication, leadership, and management processes; exploration of personal aptitudes, interests, values, and goals; examining multiple life roles and responsibilities as individuals and family members; planning and building employability skills; transferring school skills to life and work; and managing personal resources. This course includes reviewing the 16 national career clusters and Indiana's College and Career Pathways, in-depth investigation of one or more pathways, reviewing graduation plans, developing career plans, and developing personal and career portfolios. A project based approach, including computer and technology applications, cooperative ventures between school and community, simulations, and real life experiences.
GOALS
Exploring Self: Students evaluate personal characteristics to develop and refine a personal profile.
Exploring Careers: Students investigate one or more Career Clusters and Indiana’s College and Career Pathways, based on individual interests, to further define career goals.
Exploring College and Postsecondary Options: Students analyze college and other post-secondary options to know what educational opportunities are available after high school.
Making Decisions: Students apply higher order thinking and problem solving processes to make decisions about education, life and career.
Making a Plan: Students create flexible plans of action for achieving personal goals through secondary education, college, career and life.
Personal Skills: Students demonstrate personal skills needed for success in personal, family, community, and career aspects of life.
Employability Skills: Students demonstrate knowledge and skills needed to navigate life and work environments in the global economy.
MATERIALS REQUIRED: You will not have a book for this course, but we will be using many helpful resources to help develop your career and college goals. I would like you to purchase a ½ or 1 inch binder for class. This is where you can keep your notes and other material we do over the semester.
HOMEWORK: You will be required to complete 2 one page papers over the semester. I will also randomly do homework checks. Each homework check is worth 10 pts. If you have half of it completed you will receive 5 pts.
VOLUNTEER WORK: You will be required to complete 4 hours of volunteer work throughout the semester. Each nine weeks you must complete 2 hours. Each hour is worth 10 points.
LATE WORK: I will not accept any late work. If you are absent for two days etc., you will have two days to make up late work.
PARTICIPATION: You will be required to participate in class discussions. Each week you will receive 10 points. You must actively participate (discussions, lectures, bell ringers, activities in class) to receive full credit.
CLASSROOM RULES/EXPECTATIONS:
- Be on-time, on-task, and prepared to learn EVERYDAY
- Respect the teacher the classroom and other students
- Be responsible for your own learning
- Personal electronics (Ipad, cell phone, etc) for EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY!!
I will also follow the 2018-2019 Greencastle School District Student Cell Phone Policy. Upon entering Greencastle school building, you are expected to turn your cell phone off and place them out of sight, unless being used with permission from a teacher or administrator for educational purposes. Any cell phone or personal electronic device causing a disruption to the educational process during the school day will be confiscated by an adult, turned into the building administration and returned only to a parent/guardian. Students in violation of the cell phone policy will also be subject to serving a Wednesday School detention.
DISCIPLINE:
Strike 1=Warning, Strike 2=Detention/Wednesday School (Parent notified), Strike 3=Student sent to the office. Any major discipline issues will be referred directly to Mr. Rogers or Mrs. Goodpaster.
