INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: This is a "Blended" class with instruction coming from the teacher combined with independent work through Canvas. A large focus will be on learner-centered activities that promote independent and critical thinking skills. There will be days when students will be released for independent work in the hallway, 429, or LMC. Academic requirements must be met for Blended Learning Time (BLT). This means you can have no missing work and maintain an 80% grade in the class. Students with missing work or below an 80% will remain in class for individualized instructional time.
MATERIALS NEEDED FOR CLASS: Health Notebook, Pencil/Pen, Laptop.
COURSE OVERVIEW: Health Education is an introduction to health topics relevant to today’s high school student. Topics covered provide a solid background of knowledge to assist students in making healthy decisions as they move into young adulthood.
COURSE UNITS:
- Module 0: Introduction
- Module 1: Personal Assets/Homeless to Harvard
- Module 2: Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs (TAOD)
- Module 3: Relationships and Reproductive Health
- Module 4: Mental Health
- Module 5: Nutrition and Fitness
- Module 6: First Aid/CPR
- Module 7: Body Systems
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS:
- Follow the Golden Rule.
- It’s NEVER okay to disrupt the learning environment.
- It’s NEVER okay to hurt someone with your actions, words, or behavior.
- Complete all assignments and tasks on time.
POLICIES/PRODECURES
- Cell phones, earbuds, and headphones should not be used during instructional time.
- Absent from class -- obtain missing assignment from Canvas. Assignments should be completed within two class periods after an absence.
- Healthy snacks are allowed in class. Please be responsible with your trash by finding the proper receptacle.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:
If you choose not to follow the guidelines:
1st offense: Verbal or Nonverbal Warning
2nd offense: Seating Change
3rd offense: Office Referral
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Students must complete their own work. The penalty for submitting another student's work as your own is an automatic zero on that assignment and administrative referral and parent contact.
GRADING: Grades are based on a percentage of total points available. Grade breakdown is as follows:
A 94 – 100% A- 90 – 93%
B+ 87-89% B 84-86% B- 80-83%
C+ 77-79% C 74-76% C- 70-73%
D+ 67-69% D 64-66% D- 60-63%
F 59% and below
